Low Carb High Protein Powder

Low Carb High Protein Powder

In recent years, low-carb high-protein powders have gained popularity because of their convenient and easy way to increase protein intake while keeping carbohydrate intake low. People use this to lose weight, increase muscle mass for athletes, and for health improvement. Low carb high high-protein diet recommends limiting carbohydrates to under 26% (130 g) and increasing protein to 34% (170 g) in a 2,000-calorie meal plan. The National Institute of Health recommends 0.8grams of protein per kilogram (2.2 pounds).

How to Choose the Right Low Carb Protein Powder

Casein and whey protein are two types of protein found in cow’s milk. Both contain the essential amino acids, which are needed by our body.

Whey Protein is the most popular among protein supplement. It enters your bloodstream faster than any other protein and boasts the highest level of the amino acid leucine, which is good for providing muscles and is consumed after a workout or exercise. It’s considered the most effective powder for athletes aiming to consume it within an hour after exercise. There are three kinds of whey protein.

  • Concentrate whey protein Concentrate whey protein typically contains 60 to 80 percent protein by weight, with the remaining 20 to 40 percent consisting of carbohydrates, fats, lactose, and other components. Concentrate whey protein is the cheapest and most widely available form of whey protein, and it has a natural and milky taste.
  • Isolate whey protein is a more refined and pure form of whey protein. typically contains 90 percent or more protein by weight, with very little or no carbohydrates, fats, lactose, and other components. Isolate whey protein is more expensive and less common than concentrate whey protein, and it has a neutral and bland taste.
  • Hydrolysate whey protein is a form of whey protein that has been processed to break down large protein molecules into smaller fragments called peptides. This makes it easier and faster for your body to absorb and use the protein, as it does not have to digest it as much. And this is the most expensive among whey protein.

Casein protein is absorbed slowly by our body and provides slow release of amino acids and is recommended between meals or before bedtime. People who are on a fasting diet prefer this protein as this is digested and absorbed more slowly by your body. This means that casein powder protein can provide a steady and sustained release of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, to your muscles and tissues.

Plant base proteins are an excellent substitute for animal proteins and are preferred by vegans, vegetarians, and those with lactose intolerance. Plant-based protein powders offer many health benefits and are environmentally friendly. Some plant-based proteins like soy, pea, and hemp are naturally complete with amino acids, while others like rice and quinoa are often blended with other plant-based proteins to achieve completeness.

We also need to take the following factors into consideration:

  • The fewer the ingredients the better, avoid unnecessary thickeners, fillers and sweeteners.
  • Make sure you have the 9 essential amino acids.
  • Some research has found protein powders can contain high levels of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic which are toxic to our bodies. NSF approval seal is an independent third-party certification that verifies the product is free of harmful substances.
  • Last but not least, consider your lifestyle and taste preferences. Choose a low-carb, high-protein powder that you enjoy and are more likely to stick with.

I always enjoy low-carb, high-protein powder for its versatility in consumption. Don’t be afraid to experiment new recipes with protein powder, or make it as a smoothies, as I often find great joy in discovering ones that I like.
